Necessary Item For Cantilever Umbrella--Better Than Paving Stones August 4, 2010 JQPublic Bought for 10-foot cantilever `market' umbrellaCoolaroo 10 Foot Round Cantilever Freestanding Patio Umbrella, Mocha, with "+" shaped stand base--weight covered three of the four `arms' with grooved underside positioned to sit flat (for cantilever umbrellas, position weight on the opposite side(!) of the umbrella-arm direction, of course). Provides sufficient weight when filled with water only (can use sand or sand/water mixture). Has handles and smooth wheels for relocating once filled, but may leak when moving, and in fact does leak when lying flat and filled beyond halfway (still provided sufficient weight, however). The product is very large and space-consuming, dark green in colour, and not particularly attractive. Plastic material is lightweight unfilled, durable but flexible, and will not support anything heavy sitting on it, such as heavy planters used to spruce up appearance. Smooth plastic and wheels will not mar decks, as might the use of paving stones. If using water or a water/sand mix, weight would likely need to be emptied out for winter and stored, as it is unclear how well the plastic would endure a freeze, esp. with any moisture in it.
Umbrella base July 20, 2010 Sylvia 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Initially, it appeared to work well. Shortly afterwards, the water filled plastic shell started to collapse. It's awkward and takes away from the beauty of the umbrella.
Blow Away Umbrella July 19, 2010 LadysMom The weight base for my cantilevered patio umbrella is an excellent choice to balance the umbrella to prevent it from tipping or blowing over and damaging surrounding patio furniture. I decided to fill it with water as opposed to sand because, if I need to empty it, I thought the water would be easier to dispose of. The base has wheels and a handle for portability. I had no problem with the cap for the fill area because I used a small screwdriver to assist in pushing the cap into the hole. I would recommend this product for anyone needing it for the same reason I did.
Works great May 26, 2010 H. Rodney (Illinois, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thing is huge but it does the trick. We get crazy winds here and even a tornado touched down in this neighborhood last year, but my umbrella went nowhere. I highly recommend this if you have an offset umbrella that you don't want to worry about every time there's a wind gust. I wish it was a more neutral color, but you can't have everything.
Big but efficient April 10, 2010 Sandra J. Educate (Lady's Island SC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Offset umbrellas are difficult to anchor. They have no center of balance, so that has to be supplied by something very heavy. Cast iron or concrete would be expensive to ship and near impossible to move about. This base is very lightweight until filled with water. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to drain the water and the lid on the top could not be closed once the unit was filled. Great concept, but poor in execution. However, it does the job it was designed to do. Some design tweaking would make it perfect.
