 Crank on backside of poll not front August 30, 2010

I purchased two of these half umbrellas for my back patio, which gets full mid-day/afternoon sun. I thought they would be perfect to create some shade up against the house windows. Unfortunately, both umbrellas have the crank mechanism positioned on the backside of the poll (right up against the windows) and the poll can't be turned around. The slightest wind moves it quite a bit. The photo in the Amazon ad shows the crank in the front of the umbrella poll, which allows it to be pretty flush up against the building, so I don't know what happened with these two units, but both are going back. Also, the ad says they are 10' high, but the bottom edge of the fabric when open is actually around 7.5'-8'. And, the fabric is very thin--okay for shade but not for rain.

I bought the 10 ft. half umbrella to use at a party I was giving. Later that day I discovered I didn't need it. When I tried to cancel the order, Amazon told me it was too late, they had already sent the order to the seller. Because of the mailing costs involved, I decided to contact the seller, and the next morning,which was a Sunday, I received a cordial e-mail from them saying that they went ahead and processed the refund to my account. I was relieved about the shipping costs savings, and impressed with the seller's speedy and positive response. I thought this type of customer service, even with no sale for the seller, was worthy of a mention.

I ordered three of these half-umbrellas for my deck. The boxes arrived looking a bit torn on a couple of corners, but all the parts necessary for assembly were inside. I would say the "tan" color is more like a buttery cream, and that works even better with our house exterior paint color. The only complaints I would have are to do with the base. The pole still has a little wiggle room in the stand tube even with the buffer in place and cannot be held in place very securely. The base could do with being bigger or at least heavier to cope with strong breezes (a 10' umbrella can be like a sail on a deck, and more than once I've come home to find the base on its side and the umbrella blown into the trees just underneath the deck). All in all, though, I'm more than happy with my purchase. I love the modern look, the color, the tall height.

We purchased 2 of the "half" round umbrellas because of the unusual space we have. The umbrellas arrived quickly; however, the fabric awnings were both defective, with small tears and pin holes. We contacted the supplier who asked us to provide photos of the defects, which we did. Replacement fabric arrived soon thereafter, and we are overall very pleased notwithstanding the initial quality issues.

Love the umbrella. The only problem is the way it fits in the stand and the stand itself. The stand is rusting even after spraying it with a primer and enamel paint. Have bought two so far for the sun on our patio.
